Why publish this
Because finished books lie about how they were made
Every finished book presents itself as inevitable. The structure looks obvious, the voice looks like it was always there, and the six months spent going in the wrong direction have been tidied out of the record.
This is the untidy version. Drafts get posted while they're still wrong. Decisions get written down at the moment they're made, before anyone knows whether they were good ones. When something gets cut, the reason goes up with it.
It's partly for anyone else trying to write one. Mostly it's discipline: a project you report on out loud is a project that keeps moving.
